We all have nostalgic ideas of traditional Highlanders dressed in kilts of their own clan tartans. It is regretful to say that the tartan is a very recent development and a continuing one. 
In fact, tartans can be designed and drawn up on computers before being made. The two Glasgow football clubs, Rangers and Celtic, have invented their own.
