Scotland's Cities

Aberdeen
Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest city. Aberdeen is by the cost of the North Sea and there is a long promenade with many beaches. It is sometimes called 'the Granite City' because of the grey granite stone that many houses are built of. The most famous street is Union Street, which runs from Aberdeen's big harbour in a straight line for one mile. Most of the British North Sea gas is brought to land here. First the gas goes to a refinery near Aberdeen, and from there pipes transport it all over the country. Many oil companies have their offices in Aberdeen.

The crown spire of the 16th century King's College dominates old Aberdeen. There you also find St Machar's Cathedral, which was founded in 1131.

Aberdeen is also the gateway to Royal Deeside, the lovely valley of the River Dee where Prince Albert built Balmoral Castle as a summer home for Queen Victoria in the mid 19th century. The area was also the setting for the story of Queen Victoria and her faithful servant, John Brown, portrayed in the award-winning film Mrs. Brown.
North of the River Dee you find the Malt Whisky Trail, a scenic route winding over the wild heather covered hills of the Grampians.
