Stirling
Stirling is sometimes called the gateway between the Lowlands and the Highlands and in historic time the city had great importance. All routes led to Stirling and whoever held Stirling Castle controlled the Scottish nation. In 1314 the Battle of Bannockburn were fought within sight of the castle. Led by King Robert I (Robert the Bruce), the Scots defeated the English and gained almost three centuries of independence. And before that in 1297 William Wallace defeated the English at Stirling Bridge.

In Stirling Castle Mary Queen of Scots spent her childhood and here her son, the future James VI, was baptised. Today it is said to be the grandest of all Scottish castles. The medieval kitchen is excellently restored, and the Great Hall is going through the most ambitious restoration ever undertaken in Scotland.
