Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. On a rocky crag in the centre, Edinburgh Castle has been overlooking the surrounding landscape and has secured the city for over 2,000 years. The castle is the home of the Crown Jewels of Scotland - the oldest crown jewels in Europe, and you can also see the Stone of Destiny on which Scottish monarchs were crowned.

From the castle, the Royal Mile leads through the medieval Old Town to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official residence in Scotland. Nearby, you find the building for the new Scottish Parliament.

To the north of the Castle, Princes Street Garden and Princes Street mark the boundary of the Georgian New Town with its handsome buildings and broad avenues.

Every year in August, the Edinburgh International Festival takes place. The Edinburgh Film Festival and the Tattoo, which takes place on the Castle Esplanade, join it. Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year, is another festival, which takes place in Edinburgh.

If you are interested in ghost stories, Edinburgh is the right place to go. In a book it is said that it is almost impossible to move without tripping over visitors from the supernatural world. If you like, you can go on guided tours of haunted castles.
