The word WHISKY comes from the Garlic word 'UISGE-BEATHA' - the water of life. Over one hundred distilleries all over Scotland are making whisky and every whisky is different.

About half of the distilleries are near the River Spey, near Inverness, and many people go there to visit the distilleries and to taste the different whiskies. The tour is called 'The Malt Whisky Trail'. You can read more about it on this site:

There are different kinds of whisky: grained, malt and blended. Blended is a blend of the other two kinds. You can look up the differences on this address:

In short the difference is that malt whisky is made entirely from a watery extract of malted barley and it takes from 10 to 15 years to mature properly. The grain whisky is made mostly from maize. This whisky is nearer pure alcohol, has less flavour than malt whisky and does not take so long to mature. Blended whisky is a mixture of malt and grain whiskies, in the best of blends there are almost equal parts of each. This is the whisky most generally available, but its quality depends on the malt it contains.
